Acids and Caustics Recycling

As part of Veolia's metals resource recovery services, Veolia reuses select acids and caustics in the manufacturing of products derived from tin coated materials and metal-bearing sludge and scrap in a manner that meets EPA's definition of recycling. Veolia recycles acids and caustics such as:

  • Sulfuric Acid
  • Sodium Hydroxide

Processing

Spent acids and caustics are used as a replacement for acids and caustics that would be purchased for the facilities detinning process. Caustics are used to separate tin coated materials, while are acids are used to clean the recovered materials.

RCRA Exemption

Veolia has developed a number of processes, which are capable of reusing acids and caustics to manufacture a product. By utilizing your acids and caustics in our process, your waste may qualify for an exemption from RCRA.

Under US EPA regulations, 40 CFR 261.2(e)(1), hazardous secondary materials, such as used acids or caustics, that are used to manufacture a product are exempted from the definition of solid waste. Since these materials are not a solid waste they also would not be classified as a hazardous waste. Through this provision, companies can obtain an exemption from RCRA by shipping their qualifying secondary materials to Veolia for use in the manufacture of a product.

Does your acid or caustic qualify for this exemption? Submit a Veolia Waste Information Profile sheet and a representative sample for analysis and review. Veolia will evaluate the information and analytical results to determine if your material qualifies for use in our process. Acids and caustics must be of sufficient strength for continued use and must not contain significant concentrations of organics.
