Metal Bearing Sludge and Scrap Recycling
The metal finishing sector encompasses a variety of surface preparation and surface finishing operations. Many of these operations generate secondary materials that have significant metals content. As part of our metals resource recovery services, we recycle a variety of metal-bearing sludge and scrap containing:
- Copper
- Tin
- Lead
- Precious metals
- Exotic metals
Processing
Veolia produces custom feeds for smelters and other metal casting operations from qualifying metal-bearing sludge and scrap. These materials can be used as a substitute for a raw material in the manufacturing of these custom feeds and therefore are exempt from hazardous waste regulations.
RCRA Exemption
Veolia has developed a number of processes, which are capable of reusing metal-bearing sludge and solids to manufacture a product. By utilizing your metal bearing secondary materials in our process, your waste may qualify for an exemption from RCRA.
Under US EPA regulations, 40 CFR 261.2(e)(1), hazardous secondary materials, such as used metal bearing sludge and solids, that are used to manufacture a product are exempted from the definition of solid waste. Since these materials are not a solid waste they also would not be classified as a hazardous waste. Through this provision, companies can obtain an exemption from RCRA by shipping their qualifying secondary materials to Veolia for use in the manufacture of a product.
Does your metal-bearing sludge or solid qualify for this exemption? Submit a
Veolia Waste Information Profile sheet and a representative sample for analysis and review. Veolia will evaluate the information and analytical results to determine if your material qualifies for use in our process. Sludge must have a sufficient quantity of the desired metals and must not contain significant concentration of other toxics.
